In Texas, the Sunday House became popular around the 1880’s and was generally limited to German farming and ranching areas. Working on the farm was hard and isolated. The nearest church or town was usually several miles away. Sunday houses were built by many farmers as small-town homes. Used for overnight stays when the family traveled to attend Sunday church services or had business to attend to and shopping to be completed. As the farmers grew older and decided to retire the Sunday house allowed the aging population many comforts of town living without the isolated harshness of the farm.
